A suspected careless e motorcyclist has been charged as part of a clampdown on antisocial behaviour in Medway.

Kent Police was alerted to a man with an electric motorbike in Rochester town centre shortly before 1am on Sunday 8 June 2025. It was reported that the bike was being ridden in an unsafe manner on the High Street. Patrols approached the man, along with a member of the public, and the rider was detained. A search led to the recovery of cannabis and an e motorcycle was also seized.

Later that day, a man aged 19, was charged with driving without due care and attention, driving without a licence and using a motor vehicle without insurance. He was also charged with possession of a class B drug.

The rider from Strood, was bailed to appear before Medway Magistrates’ Court on 11 July.

Previously, and on an unrelated matter, officers in Gillingham seized five e scooters on Saturday 7 June. High visibility patrols were carried out in the High Street as part of enforcement activity to target nuisance behaviour.

A further seven e scooters were recovered in Chatham town centre on Monday 9 June.

Inspector Paul Diddams from Medway’s Community Safety Unit said:

‘Antisocial behaviour relating to the public use of electric scooters and electric motorbikes is not just disruptive for other road users, it is also highly dangerous.

‘It’s illegal to ride an e scooter on a public road, cycle lane or pavement, and, under current law, the only place that they can be used is on private land. Electric motorbikes are subject to the same legislation as other motor vehicles.

‘We’re committed to keeping pedestrians and road users safe and will continue to take action which may include seizing e scooters and e motorbikes, and reporting riders for any offences they may have committed.’
