A man is behind bars after police uncovered a loaded sawn-off shotgun hidden in a garage during an investigation into motorbike thefts.

Adam Green, 37, from Gillingham, was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at Maidstone Crown Court. He had pleaded guilty to the transfer of a prohibited weapon.

The discovery was made on March 7, 2024, when officers investigating stolen motorbikes conducted searches at a garage block in Tangmere Close. Inside an unrented property, police found a stolen black KTM motorcycle. A subsequent search of the same garage revealed a sawn-off shotgun, loaded with a cartridge, wrapped in a towel and concealed within a set of drawers.

Investigators also located a vehicle grille nearby, which was linked to Green. Forensic examination of the firearm and cartridge later confirmed Green’s DNA was present.

Green was arrested on March 14, 2024, after being stopped on a motorcycle in Chatham. Charges of handling stolen property and possessing a firearm and ammunition while prohibited due to a previous conviction were ordered to lie on file.

Detective Constable Perry Wraight, of Kent Police’s Serious Organised Crime Unit, said:

‘It is an absolute offence to possess a sawn-off shotgun as its only possible purpose is to be used in crime. When our officers located the weapon with a loaded cartridge it was vital we tracked down the person who had hidden it in the garage.

‘Our enquiries proved Green had handled the weapon and he is now starting a prison sentence. Medway is a safer place now he is behind bars and the shotgun has been taken out of circulation.’
