Police in Medway have intensified patrols in town centers, leading to the arrest of multiple individuals suspected of shoplifting and handling stolen goods. The crackdown, part of a summer initiative, has seen neighborhood teams and response officers working closely with CCTV operators to swiftly apprehend suspects.

On Tuesday, July 22, 2025, officers made several arrests across Chatham. In one incident, a report of stolen alcohol being sold on the High Street led to the detention of two women and the recovery of a bottle of wine and other items. Separately, Primark staff reported the theft of £71 worth of clothing, resulting in the swift arrest of a man and the recovery of the stolen garments. Another man was arrested in the town center later that day. A further arrest was made after cleaning products and confectionery valued at £91 were reported stolen from a local B&M store.

Inspector Diddams said:

‘We are determined to tackle anyone who chooses to target retail premises in our town centres. Business owners and shoppers will see additional patrols in the area throughout the summer and anyone suspected of committing crime will be stopped, searched and arrested when appropriate. Persistent offenders should expect to be charged by our investigators and receive an early court appearance to answer for their actions.’

Following investigations, several individuals have been charged in connection with these incidents. Two women were charged with theft, with one remanded to appear in court and the other bailed. A man was charged with handling stolen property and bailed for a court hearing in August. Additionally, two men were charged with theft and remanded to appear before magistrates.
