Good news for bargain hunters and eco-conscious shoppers alike! Kent has just welcomed its very first reuse shop, nestled at the New Romney Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC). This exciting new venture, a collaboration between Kent County Council (KCC) and FCC Environment, is set to transform the way we think about unwanted items.
Imagine finding that perfect quirky lamp, a gently used piece of furniture, or even a classic book – all at a fraction of the cost and with the added bonus of helping the planet. That’s exactly what the new shop offers! It’s a fantastic opportunity for items that still have plenty of life left in them to find a new home instead of heading to landfill.
How it Works: Giving Items a Second Chance
Locals can now easily donate their good quality, pre-loved goods directly at the New Romney HWRC at Mountfield Road New Romney TN28 8LD or at designated drop-off points at other nearby HWRCs across Kent. These treasures will then be carefully displayed in the shop, ready for you to discover.
Shop with a Purpose: Good for Your Wallet, Good for the World
Every purchase you make isn’t just a win for your wallet; it’s a win for the environment too. By opting for “new-to-you” items, you’re helping to reduce waste and promote a more sustainable way of living. Plus, there’s an even warmer fuzzy feeling to be had: proceeds from the shop will go towards supporting the KCC Chairman’s chosen charities and other deserving local charities. So, whether you’re on the hunt for a unique find, keen to save some money, or simply want to contribute to a greener community, the New Romney reuse shop is definitely worth a visit. Happy treasure hunting!
David Wimble, KCC’s Cabinet Member for Environment, said:
“This reuse shop will mean residents can pick up quality items at an affordable price while helping to reduce waste as much as possible. Our household waste recycling centres are particularly busy at this time of year so there will be a good range of products available. ‘I would encourage people to visit the shop and see what’s on offer, but also to donate any items they no longer need at their local HWRC so they can be given a new home.”
FCC has been instrumental in enhancing the visibility and convenience of reuse at the council-owned HWRCs, operating 14 of the 19 HWRC’s across Kent. Chris Ellis, FCC’s Operations Director Waste & Recycling commented,
“Our goal is to make it as easy as possible for residents to donate items that might otherwise have gone to waste for reuse. Many of the recycling centres operated by FCC on behalf of KCC now accept a range of products for reuse, providing an accessible location to donate any underappreciated items residents have stowed away in the corners of their homes.”
