Work has officially begun on a vibrant new art installation set to transform a key underpass in Dover. Dubbed the “Dover Time Tunnel,” the colourful artwork is part of a wider renovation project to revitalize the Townwall Street underpass, connecting the high street to the waterfront.

Designed in-house by Dover District Council (DDC), the new installation offers a glimpse into Dover’s rich history. It features a bold and creative design, incorporating information and images sourced from various partner organizations and individuals. Contractors are currently preparing the underpass walls by fixing base boards, which will hold the artwork panels.

The “Dover Time Tunnel” is being installed alongside the multi-million-pound Dover Beacon project, a major development that is on track for completion in 2026. The Dover Beacon is also scheduled to celebrate a significant milestone, a “topping out” ceremony, in September 2025.

The underpass renovation began in June, following a public consultation process in 2023 that included community events and an online survey. The project is a key part of efforts to improve connectivity within the town and attract future investment.

Cllr Kevin Mills, Leader of Dover District Council said:

“We are delighted to see work starting on the Dover Time Tunnel artwork, as part of the renovation of the underpass, and complementing the landmark development of The Bench building. We would like to say a big thank you to everyone involved and to all our partners who have worked with us and helped provide information and images for this exciting project.”
