Folkestone & Hythe District Council is asking for public feedback on proposed changes to its Council Tax Reduction Scheme which provides more support for working-age, low-income households starting in April 2026. The proposed adjustments would increase the amount of council tax support that households receive based on their financial circumstances.
Currently, there are four different support bands, but under the new plan, the support levels would be significantly increased across the board. For example, the lowest support band would jump from 22% to 25%, while the highest would increase from 75% to a full 100% reduction.
Cllr Tim Prater, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance and Governance, said:
“The proposed changes to the council tax reduction scheme will provide extra support to those who need it most, and make it easier to get that support. It will also reduce the amount of work required in the background – ensuring officers can better work with residents facing financial hardship.”
Nearly 6,000 working age households in the district currently receive council tax reduction.
The cost is spread across Folkestone & Hythe District Council, Kent County Council, Kent Fire & Rescue, the Office of the Kent Police and Crime Commissioner, and town and parish councils. Visit the council’s website before 3pm on 26 October 2025 for further details and to take part in the public consultation. Printed versions can be made available on request by calling 01303 853000. Pension age households will not be affected as central government dictate the operation of said scheme.
