An early morning fire in Margate today, 30 August has been attributed to a carelessly discarded cigarette, prompting a warning from Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) about the dangers of smoking at home.
Two fire engines and crews were dispatched to a flat on Princess Margaret Avenue at 5:38am after reports of a fire. Firefighters, equipped with breathing apparatus, used a high-pressure hose reel jet to quickly extinguish the blaze. One person was treated by the South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) at the scene.
According to KFRS, the fire’s cause is believed to be accidental and linked to a cigarette that was not properly put out. The service is using the incident as a stark reminder for residents to always dispose of cigarettes responsibly. The fire was fully under control by 6:57am.
“It’s very easy to fall asleep without realising that your cigarette is still burning,” a KFRS spokesperson said, urging people to be especially vigilant when tired, using prescription drugs, or after drinking alcohol.
