Kent Police have put reckless drivers on notice with a targeted operation aimed at clamping down on road offences and dangerous behaviour, including the misuse of e-scooters. The crackdown, which took place last Wednesday, saw officers sweep through the town to identify and penalize motorists who pose a risk to the public.
In a proactive effort with Folkestone & Hythe council, taxi licensing, and environmental protection officers, Kent Police focused on several key areas, including Dover Road, Tontine Street, and Shorncliffe Road. The operation, dubbed “Operation Safe Streets,” deployed a force of 20 officers in both marked and unmarked patrols. Their objective was clear: catch dangerous drivers, ensure compliance with traffic laws, and identify suspected drink or drug drivers.
A particular focus of the operation was the rising number of offences involving e-scooters. With more and more people using them for transportation, police are keen to ensure they are ridden safely and legally. This initiative is part of an ongoing commitment to make Folkestone’s roads safer for all users, whether they’re in a car, on a bike, or walking.
A spokesperson for Kent Police confirmed the success of the operation, noting that numerous drivers and passengers were engaged throughout the day. While specific numbers of arrests and citations have not yet been released, the police have stated that the operation was a resounding success in identifying and penalizing those who pose a risk to the public. This joint initiative is part of an ongoing campaign to make Folkestone’s roads safer for everyone. Authorities hope the high-visibility presence and strict enforcement will deter future offences and encourage safer driving habits across the community.
As a result, multiple Traffic Offence Reports were made, alongside a number of arrests:
- Two arrests for suspected drug driving.
- One recall to prison following identification by plainclothes officers in the town centre.
- 31 Traffic Offence Reports issued for offences including speeding, mobile phone use, lack of insurance, and seatbelt violations.
- Four e-scooters seized.
- One rental van seized due to suspected fake documentation and lack of valid insurance.
- One taxi driver arrested for drug driving.
PC Kevin Marsh said:
‘This operation highlights the benefits of partnership working and proactive engagement. By removing dangerous drivers and illegal vehicles from the roads, we are making Folkestone a safer place both on and off the roads. We would also like to remind the public that if you are found riding an unsafe or illegal vehicle, such as an e-bike, or e-scooter you must prepare for it to be seized or face potential prosecution.’
