From September 12–21, Heritage Open Days offers a rare chance to step inside nearly 30 of Thanet’s most iconic and fascinating buildings. This year’s theme is ‘Architecture,’ and the festival’s free events span across Margate, Broadstairs, Ramsgate, and the surrounding villages.

- Margate’s Adult Education Centre: Take a guided tour of this Grade II Listed building, an austere 1931 Art Deco masterpiece that once served as the Thanet School of Art. Admire its original wooden paneling, radiators, and grand staircase.
- Isle of Thanet: Architecture Through the Decades: Head to Droit House in Margate for a unique photography exhibition. Featuring archive images from the renowned Sunbeam Collection, this exhibit showcases some of the Isle’s most iconic buildings, including a few that are no longer standing.
- Pierremont Hall in Broadstairs: Walk through the Chamber Hall and Music Room of this beautiful 1785 residence. The Grade II Listed building holds a royal connection, having hosted the Duchess of Kent and a young Princess Victoria on holiday.
- 154 High Street, Ramsgate: Uncover the secrets of this important Georgian townhouse with an Edwardian extension. Explore the beautifully restored main house, which features a magnificent staircase, and find the secret staircase hidden behind a wardrobe. The basement, used as an air raid shelter during World War II, adds another layer of history.
- Birchington’s Historic Trail: Celebrate the 130th anniversary of Station Road with a self-guided trail. Scan QR codes at each stop to learn about the history and unique architectural features of the properties.
