Firefighters were called to a recycling skip fire on Mountfield Road in New Romney yesterday afternoon, 5 September 2025. Two fire engines from Kent Fire and Rescue Service responded to the incident, which occurred just after 1:27pm

Crews used high-pressure hose reel jets to extinguish the blaze, which was brought fully under control just after 2pm. No injuries were reported, and the fire is believed to have been caused by a improperly discarded lithium-ion battery. The incident highlights the dangers of disposing of such batteries in regular recycling or waste streams.
