On August 29, 2025, two men allegedly stole a lawnmower from a garage on Bethersden Road in Ashford. Two days later, a similar theft occurred from a garage near Stream Lane in Hawkhurst. In both cases, a white van was seen in the area. Following an investigation, a 61-year-old man was arrested. He has been released on bail while police conduct further inquiries. Detectives believe these incidents may be linked to other burglaries that took place between August 29 and September 4 in the areas of Frittenden, Goudhurst, Lamberhurst, and Sandhurst.

How to Protect Your Property

Rural businesses and farms are often targets for thieves, especially for valuable equipment and tools. Here are some simple steps you can take to protect your belongings:

  • Secure your tools: Lock equipment in a secure building or a strong toolbox when not in use.
  • Use alarms and lighting: Install a burglar alarm on your buildings and consider adding outdoor security lights.
  • Lock up vehicles: Always lock vehicles, even if they’re left outside, and keep the keys with you.
  • Mark and register your items: Mark your tools and equipment with your name or a unique number. Keep a detailed list of all your valuables, including serial numbers.
  • Use physical deterrents: Consider using wheel clamps, hitch locks, or ground anchors on trailers and larger equipment.
