An investigation is underway after 23 high-value pedigree rams were stolen from a farm in Mersham, near Ashford. The brazen theft, which police believe occurred between September 4 and September 6, has left the local farming community reeling.

The alarm was raised by the farmer on Monday, September 8, after he discovered the prized breeding rams were missing from their field. Among the stolen animals are two Bleu Du Maine, four Beltex, and 17 Millenium Blue rams. The combined value of the livestock is significant due to their pedigree status and use for breeding.

“This was a very targeted crime,” a police spokesperson stated. “These are not just any sheep. They are specific, high-value animals, and the thieves would have likely known exactly what they were looking for.”

The stolen animals have distinctive characteristics that may make them easier to identify. The Bleu Du Maine rams are a particularly rare breed in Kent, known for their dark blue leathery faces, white coats, and wool-free legs. The Beltex rams have a white face and fleece, while the Millenium Blues are noted for their white fleece and a unique bluish tinge to their faces.

Kent Police are appealing to the public for information and any potential CCTV footage. Detectives are particularly keen to speak with the driver of a white transit van that was spotted driving past the fields on Wednesday, September 3, between 9:30 pm and 9:35 pm.

“Even the smallest detail could be crucial to our investigation,” the spokesperson added. “We urge anyone who may have seen the van or any suspicious activity in the area around that time to come forward.”

Rural crime, including livestock theft, remains a persistent issue in the region, and this latest incident has renewed calls for vigilance among farmers.
