At around 15:30 traffic on the M20 was held in both directions whilst Kent Fire and Rescue Service tackled a car fire on the M20 westbound raised section which passes over the A20.

At 16:20 the with the fire under control Kent Police released traffic on the east/coastbound carriageway. The westbound carriageway remains closed with National Highways Traffic Officers implementing traffic management at J9. Traffic caught within the closure is being released slowly past the scene in lane 3. The closure remains in place for recovery of the vehicle and also due to a substantial diesel spill which will require assessment and potential resurfacing prior to re-opening.

Diversion Route

Road users are advised to follow the hollow square diversion symbol:

  • Leave the M20 at J9 onto Fougeres way and follow to the roundabout with the A20.
  • Take the 3rd exit onto the A20 heading west.
  • Follow the A20 through Charing, Lenham and Harrietsham back to the M20 J8 and rejoin the M20 westbound at J8 to continue your journey.

If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey. Further information is available from National Highways by visiting our www.trafficengland.com website and travel apps, or via our regional X feed.
