Storm Amy is expected to bring a period of strong and gusty winds to parts of England and Wales including Kent on Saturday.

West to south-westerly winds will strengthen and become gusty from midnight on Friday evening to 7.00pm on Saturday. Gusts of 45-55 mph are possible in places across Kent and the wider region, with winds perhaps reaching 60-65 mph along some exposed coasts though they should gradually ease later on Saturday. Some bus and train services could be affected, with journeys taking longer.

It is likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts, and coastal communities in Kent will be affected by spray and/or large waves.

Some short term loss of power and other services is possible.

Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges are likely.

Some delays to road, rail, air, and ferry transport are possible.

The Met Office recommends the following:

  • Travel: Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary.
  • Power Cuts: People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. Consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack, and other essential items.
  • Coastal Safety: If you are on the coast, stay safe during stormy weather by being aware of large waves. Even from the shore large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea. Take care if walking near cliffs; know your route and keep dogs on a lead. In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
  • Monitor Updates: Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly: stay up to date with the weather forecast in your area.
