A man suspected of using a drone to smuggle illegal drugs into HMP Maidstone has been arrested after a months-long investigation by Kent Police’s specialist Prison Crime Investigation Team. The operation was launched after a drone and an accompanying package containing illegal items, including a large quantity of cannabis, were discovered within the prison grounds on January 21, 2025.

Following extensive forensic testing and detective work to identify the suspect, officers swooped on an address in Plaistow, East London, on October 2. A 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of conveying a prohibited article into prison. During the raid, police also seized 50 wraps of suspected cocaine, leading to an additional charge of possession with intent to supply a Class A drug. Following his interview, the man, who was found to be on licence for a previous conviction, was immediately recalled to prison for breaching his licence terms while enquiries continue.

The Kent Police Prison Crime Investigation Team, based at Sittingbourne, works closely with all seven of the county’s prisons to tackle jail-related crime. The dedicated unit has a strong track record, having secured over 94 years of cumulative sentences in 2024 alone, in addition to one life sentence. A spokesperson for Kent Police confirmed that enquiries into the alleged drone delivery are ongoing.

Detective Inspector Scott Machin said:

‘Criminal activity behind bars doesn’t just affect those inside – it can fuel violence and prolong criminal networks that pose a threat to our communities. By targeting those who try to smuggle contraband into prisons, we are disrupting organised crime at its roots and helping to make our streets safer. We have a very good relationship with the prisons in our county and share a strong commitment to protecting the public.’
