My Community Voice has warned residents to be on their guard after it received reports about a man going door-to-door in Canterbury, claiming he noticed loose roof tiles and offering to do immediate repairs. When residents refused, he continued to target other homes in the area.

This is a classic rogue trader tactic. What to Look Out For

  • Scare Tactics: Rogue traders often use claims of urgent property damage (like loose tiles) to create panic and pressure you into agreeing to unnecessary, rushed, or massively overpriced work.
  • Rapid Movement: They typically move quickly from house to house, looking for residents who may be more vulnerable or easily convinced.

How to Protect Yourself and Your Home

  1. Never Agree to Work from Cold Callers. Simply decline the offer and close the door. Reputable contractors don’t need to cold-call for emergency work.
  2. Use Trusted Tradespeople. If you genuinely need work done on your home or garden, always use a reliable, verified professional. We recommend using a safe, local trader from KCC Trading Standards Checked: Trading Standards Checked.
  3. Report Suspicious Activity. If you see this type of activity or are concerned, please report it to Kent Police on 101 or use their online reporting service.
  4. In an Emergency, Call 999. If you feel threatened or unsafe at any point, call 999 immediately.

Stay safe and look out for your neighbours!
