Folkestone was abuzz with pride and applause on Sunday, October 12th, as The First Battalion, the Royal Gurkha Rifles (1RGR), marched through the town! The soldiers were exercising their Freedom of the Town—a prestigious honour granted to them by the Folkestone Charter Trustees way back in 2004.

The day kicked off with a brilliant ceremonial event right outside Folkestone’s Town Hall. The formal inspection and speeches from dignitaries like Major (Retd) Dennis Bradley BEM DL and the Worshipful Town Mayor of Folkestone, Cllr Lucy McGirr, set a celebratory tone. Following the formalities, Lt Col. John Jeffcoat officially sought the Mayor’s permission, and with a resounding “Permission granted!” the magnificent parade stepped off!

Folkestone has long been a home away from home for many military regiments, but the Royal Gurkha Rifles hold a truly special place in the community’s heart. Their courage, dedication, and service have deeply enriched local life, and Folkestone has been privileged to share in their traditions. With the Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas providing a rousing soundtrack, the Battalion set off from Guildhall Street around 10:10 am. They made a spectacular sight as they marched through the town, along The Leas, and down to Sandgate Road, soaking up the atmosphere. The streets were lined with cheering and applauding members of the public, all eager to show their support and gratitude for these incredible soldiers!

The parade culminated at the Garden of Remembrance, where the troops gathered for a moving ceremony: the Gurkha Memorial Fund’s 10th Anniversary at the Gurkha Soldier Memorial Statue. It was a perfect ending to a memorable day that celebrated the deep and lasting bond between Folkestone and its cherished Gurkhas!
