Hopes are soaring in Ashford following a pivotal announcement by the Office of Rail and Road (ORR), which has been hailed as a major breakthrough in bringing direct international rail services back to the town’s station.

The ORR has granted wider access to the Temple Mills International depot, a critical step that removes a significant hurdle for new train operators looking to launch cross-Channel services. This news is particularly exciting for Ashford, as potential new entrant Virgin Trains has already publicly committed to stopping at Ashford International and Ebbsfleet.

Councillor Noel Ovenden, Leader of Ashford Borough Council, expressed the town’s delight.

“We are delighted by this news,” he said. “Granting wider access… is a pivotal step in opening up the cross-Channel rail market. This move could not only enable potential new operators… but it also creates the right conditions for the return of direct international trains to Kent, including Ashford and Ebbsfleet.”

The council is banking on the return of services to deliver significant regional benefits. Cllr Ovenden stressed that increased competition will mean “more choice for passengers, lower fares, and new destinations,” bringing “significant economic and connectivity benefits to Kent and the wider region.”

He concluded with a clear message:

“Ashford International stands ready. Ready for trade – Ready for jobs – Ready for tourism – Ready to return to the international train map.”

Following the positive announcement, Ashford Borough Council is now urging the Government to take the next step by setting up a working group to “resolve any remaining issues in getting Kent stations open and operational again.” This final push aims to ensure the town can swiftly capitalise on the ORR’s decision and welcome international travellers once more.
