Eurotunnel in Cheriton

It’s understood the owner of the Channel Tunnel, Getlink (formerly Eurotunnel), has announced the cancellation of all future rail investments in the UK, citing an “unparalleled” and disproportionate planned hike in its Business Rates tax bill.

The decision, which the company claims makes future UK projects loss-making, raises concerns about the long-term rail connectivity and economic prospects for Kent, particularly around its major international rail hubs.

It’s been reported the company currently pays £22 million a year in business rates but believes this could jump to £65 million by 2028.
