A Sittingbourne man has pleaded guilty to illegally dumping large containers of controlled waste in Canterbury.

The man, Robin Dennis Turner aged 74, was fined a total of £365 at Margate Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, November 27.

Canterbury City Council’s Environmental Crime Officers and Kent Police’s Rural Task Force located Turner and his truck on June 18, 2024, following a tip-off. He was caught after allegedly dumping containers full of household and domestic waste on land behind Boots and Hobbycraft on a retail estate. Turner claimed he was only the driver, instructed to move and drop the bulkers from unknown locations in Kent. He pleaded guilty under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 for failing to produce documentation showing the waste’s origin.

Cllr Connie Nolan, Cabinet member for enforcement, praised the swift action: “This case highlights how waste was illegally transported and dumped in our district on a significant scale… We remain vigilant and ready to tackle such blatant law breaking.”
