British Transport Police (BTP) is stepping up protective security measures across the rail network, including key routes through Kent, following the “horrific” terrorist attack at Bondi Beach, Australia, which specifically targeted Jewish communities during a Hanukkah celebration.
The force released a statement expressing profound shock and sadness over the appalling loss of innocent lives in Sydney, an act confirmed by Australian authorities to be terrorism targeting the Jewish community.
Acknowledging the “significant concern” this act of antisemitic violence will cause for Jewish communities across the UK, BTP is working directly with Counter Terrorism Policing and local forces to provide visible reassurance.
A spokesperson for BTP emphasised:
- Increased Visibility: There will be a heightened police presence on trains and at stations, particularly those serving areas with significant Jewish populations or hosting Hanukkah events, throughout Kent and the broader South East network.
- Community Liaison: Close cooperation with local partners is underway to ensure Jewish communities on and around the rail network feel safe and supported.
The attack, which tragically claimed multiple lives on the first night of Hanukkah, has led to a national review of security protocols in the UK.
BTP stressed the importance of public vigilance, especially in and around the transport system.
“Hatred and violence have no place in our societies. We urge everyone to remain vigilant and report any concerns to the police. If you see or hear something that doesn’t feel right, report it online and in confidence at gov.uk/ACT. In an emergency call 999.”
