Chatham Man Charged After Hospital Attack Leaves Staff Member with Serious Facial Injury


A 21-year-old man from Chatham has been remanded in custody following a violent disturbance at Medway Maritime Hospital on Saturday morning. The incident resulted in a hospital staff member sustaining a serious facial injury and three police officers allegedly being assaulted.

Police responded to the Windmill Road hospital site at 9:40 a.m. on December 20 following reports of a fracas. Kent Police confirmed that a staff member and several visitors were targeted during the outburst. The injured staff member required immediate medical attention for their injuries.

The violence allegedly continued following the suspect’s arrest. While at a local police station, Onyekewazie Abuah, 21, is accused of assaulting three police officers. Abuah, from Medway appeared before Magistrates’ on Monday, December 22, facing charges of Inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent, two counts of assault and three counts of assaulting an emergency worker (constable) in the execution of their duty.

The defendant was remanded in custody and is due to return to court on Tuesday, December 30.
