The battle against illegal dumping has gone digital! Maidstone Borough Council (MBC) is officially deploying a high-tech “eye in the sky” to hunt down fly-tippers, turning the tide on waste crime with cutting-edge drone technology.

Gone are the days of officers trekking through miles of rural terrain to locate hidden junk. MBC’s new drone fleet can scout vast distances in a fraction of the time, pinpointing illegal sites in minutes rather than hours. These aerial reinforcements aren’t just looking for trash; equipped with state-of-the-art thermal imaging, they can even sniff out burning waste the moment it ignited.

The speed of the drone program is delivering massive results on the ground. Between April and September:

  • 1,687 fly-tips were detected and reported.
  • 1,104 sites were scrubbed clean within just four days.
  • 146 offenders have already been hit with heavy fines or legal action.

While massive commercial-scale dumps still require specialist heavy machinery to clear, the message is clear: if you dump it, the council will find it.

As the holiday season kicks off, MBC is bracing for a surge in reports from eagle-eyed residents out on festive walks. While the sheer volume of holiday waste might slightly slow down clean-up times, the council’s Waste Crime Team and Kent Police are staying locked in. They are reminding everyone to dispose of household waste responsibly—or risk starting the New Year with a criminal record.
