The Met Office has updated the predicted Storm Goretti forecast saying it is now expected to bring a period of significant disruption to the southern coastal strip of Kent starting this afternoon, Thursday, 8 January 2026, and continuing through the night.
While the warning is broad, the specific geography of Folkestone (coastal) and Hawkinge (high ground) means we are likely to experience the higher end of the forecast wind speeds.
Because Hawkinge sits on the North Downs and Folkestone is directly on the coast, it is advised to prepare for gusts between 60–70 mph.
- Hawkinge & High Ground: Expect higher wind speeds and more exposure. Loose garden items, fences, and sheds are at higher risk due to the elevation.
- Folkestone Seafront: High risk of “overtopping” where large waves throw sea-foam and pebbles onto coastal roads and the Harbour Arm.
- Travel Disruption: Expect delays on the M20 and A20. High-sided vehicles should take extra care on the hill between Folkestone and Hawkinge. Southeastern rail and Eurotunnel services may experience delays or cancellations.
- Power & Tech: Potential for power cuts and intermittent mobile signal, particularly in more rural parts of Hawkinge.
⏱️ Timeline: When will it hit?
- Thursday Afternoon: Winds will begin to pick up. This is the time to secure outdoor items.
- Thursday Evening (Peak): The strongest winds are expected during this window. Avoid unnecessary travel.
- Friday Early Hours: Conditions will gradually ease as the storm moves east.
🛡️ How to Stay Safe
Important: If you live on the Folkestone coast, stay well back from the sea wall. Even shallow water moving at speed can sweep a person off their feet.
- Secure Your Property: Check for loose trampolines, bins, and garden furniture. If you are in Hawkinge, ensure sheds and fences are as secure as possible.
- Travel With Caution: If you must drive between Folkestone and Hawkinge, be aware of crosswinds on the A260 and A20.
- Prepare for Outages: Charge your mobile phones now and keep a torch (with spare batteries) handy.
- Protect Pets: Keep dogs on leads if walking near the Leas or cliffs, as sudden gusts can be disorienting and dangerous.
