SWALE – A vehicle fire on the M2 motorway led to significant traffic disruption on Saturday morning, requiring a response from emergency services to extinguish the blaze.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) was alerted to the incident at 10:32 AM on Saturday, 10 January 2026. The fire occurred on the London-bound carriageway between Junction 5 (Sittingbourne) and Junction 4 (Gillingham). Two fire engines were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, crews discovered a car well-alight on the motorway. Firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus utilized high-pressure hose reel jets to combat the flames. The operation lasted approximately 90 minutes, with the scene declared safe at 12:11 PM.

The incident required a multi-agency response to manage the scene and the resulting traffic build-up. A spokesperson for the Kent Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that there were no reported injuries and following an initial investigation, the cause of the fire is believed to have been accidental.
