Sandgate Road Folkestone
FOLKESTONE – Kent County Council (KCC) has officially commenced refurbishment work at 14 Sandgate Road, marking the start of a project to establish a modern community hub for Folkestone Library and the town’s Adult Education Centre. The development aims to return a full suite of library, registration, and archive services to the town centre for the first time in three years.
The new facility will integrate an adult and children’s library with local history collections, bright community event spaces, and enhanced digital facilities including public computers and free Wi-Fi. In addition to traditional library services, the hub will provide modern classrooms for adult education and dedicated spaces for birth and death registration appointments.
KCC Deputy Leader Brian Collins stated that the project delivers on a promise to provide residents with the high-quality services they deserve through a practical and welcoming space. Paul Webb, Cabinet Member for Community and Regulatory Services, noted that the central location would finally bring essential services back under one roof, while Cabinet Member for Education and Skills Beverley Fordham emphasized the hub’s role in helping residents transform their futures through accessible learning.
Construction specialists G A Harper Ltd began work on the site on January 5, 2026. Managing Director Glenn Harper confirmed the team is working toward a late April handover, ensuring a high-quality refurbishment for the community. The hub is scheduled to open in Spring 2026, with a specific opening date expected to be announced by the end of April.
As work progresses on the Sandgate Road site, KCC’s Growth, Environment and Transport Cabinet Committee is scheduled to meet tomorrow, January 13, to consider a report regarding the future of the library and the building at 2 Grace Hill.
