Ever notice how when one street gets parking restrictions, the next street over suddenly becomes a chaotic game of automotive Tetris? Folkestone & Hythe District Council is looking to fix that “domino effect” with a fresh approach to Controlled Parking Zones (CPZs).
Since 2015, the district has handled parking on a street-by-street basis, but after listening to resident feedback, it’s clear that a “joined-up” strategy is needed. The goal? To stop simply moving the parking headache from one block to the next and ensure the rules actually work for the whole community.
The council is now proposing three main shifts to make the system fairer and more efficient:
- A “Big Picture” Approach: Instead of considering petitions for single roads, the council will look at wider areas. This prevents parking issues from just “leaking” into the next street.
- Higher Bars for Entry: To ensure a zone is truly wanted, 60% of neighbours must now support a formal consultation (up from the current 50%).
- Support for Essential Workers: A limited number of permits would be opened up for teachers, healthcare workers, and emergency services to ensure those who care for the community can actually park in it.
- Fairness for Motorcyclists: With digital permits now standard, motorcycles will be charged for permits just like cars. It’s all about ensuring every vehicle type pays its fair share.
“On-street parking needs to strike a balance between the needs of local residents and the wider community,” says Cllr Polly Blakemore. “This new framework aims to avoid the difficulties caused by the old street-by-street approach.”
