CANTERBURY — A major emergency response is underway in the heart of Canterbury this evening as firefighters continue to battle a significant fire at a derelict building on St George’s Place.

The incident, which began shortly after 2:00 pm on Saturday, 14 February 2026, has seen the fire service presence scale up significantly throughout the afternoon as crews work to bring the flames under control.

Initially, ten fire engines were dispatched to the scene. However, by 6:30 pm, the response had grown to include:

  • 15 fire engines * 2 height vehicles (aerial platforms)
  • Specialist equipment: High-pressure hose reel jets and positive pressure ventilation fans.
  • Support: The Volunteer Rapid Response Team is on-site providing welfare support to the crews.

Firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus are currently working inside the structure to extinguish the remaining “seats of fire,” while large fans are being used to clear the building of heavy smoke.

The Kent Fire and Rescue Service has issued a standing advisory for everyone living or traveling near St George’s Place:

“Please keep all windows and doors closed due to the volume of smoke in the area.”

In addition to the smoke hazard, a local road has been closed to allow emergency vehicles access. Local residents and visitors should expect heavier traffic than usual and are advised to avoid the area if possible.

Authorities are making good progress but expect to remain at the scene well into the evening. Residents are asked to share this safety information with neighbours and loved ones in the vicinity, particularly those who may not have access to internet updates.
