CANTERBURY – Health officials have escalated their response to an “unprecedented” meningitis outbreak at the University of Kent, confirming today that 20 cases of invasive meningococcal disease are now under investigation.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) reported that of these, nine cases are lab-confirmed with six specifically identified as the Meningitis B (MenB) strain, while 11 notifications remain under investigation.
Two young people have died since the outbreak began last week: a University of Kent student and a Year 13 pupil from a school in nearby Faversham.
