A woman who deliberately ignited a pile of rubbish beneath a block of flats in Chatham has been jailed for more than two years.
The incident occurred at approximately 12:05 AM on Saturday, December 13, 2025, when Michelle Sutcliffe entered the parking area of Carton House on New Road. Once inside, she intentionally set fire to refuse positioned between two parked cars and walked away as the flames began to take hold.

Following a review of CCTV footage, Sutcliffe was clearly identified as the offender. She was arrested on 19 December and later charged with arson with recklessness as to whether life was endangered.
Sutcliffe, aged 40, of Lester Road, Chatham, pleaded guilty and was sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court on Thursday 26 March 2026 to two years and two months’ imprisonment.
Investigating officer Police Constable Evie Cousins said:
‘Sutcliffe’s reckless and thoughtless behaviour caused significant financial damage and created real fear among residents as the fire spread. It is fortunate that no one was injured, as fires of this nature can escalate rapidly. Sutcliffe must now face the consequences of her actions.’
