Rochester Prepares For Transformation at Vibrant Sweeps Festival

Returning from Saturday, 2 May to Monday, 4 May 2026, the historic streets of Rochester will transform into the UK’s largest May Day celebration of folk music and dance.

This vibrant three-day extravaganza, a Medway tradition since 1981, recreates the historic chimney sweeps’ holiday famously noted by Charles Dickens. Visitors can expect a lively atmosphere filled with dozens of Morris sides, international dance troupes from India and Slovakia, and headline musical acts like The Singing Loins and The Silver Darlings.

Beyond the music, visitors can enjoy interactive history performances by Pretending People, river cruises via Jetstream Tours, and family-friendly heritage trails at the Guildhall Museum and Eastgate House. The festival is completely free to attend, offering a diverse array of food, drink, and culture against the backdrop of Rochester Castle.

To ensure a smooth journey, organizers recommend using public transport. A free bus weekend will be in effect, complemented by a free park-and-ride service from the University of Greenwich (Medway Campus). For those travelling from London, Rochester station is a convenient 34-minute train ride away, placing you right in the heart of the festivities.
