A 23-year-old man from Dover has been jailed following a reckless 20-minute police pursuit that began in Edenbridge and spanned multiple counties.

The incident unfolded on the evening of Sunday, April 19, when officers spotted Walker acting suspiciously behind the wheel of a blue Ford KA on Mont St Aignan Way. Despite clear signals to pull over, Walker ignored police and initiated a high-speed chase.

During the pursuit, the driver, Sam Walker from Dover displayed a blatant disregard for public safety by racing through red lights and weaving dangerously through traffic. At one point, he reached speeds of 60mph in a 30mph zone and narrowly avoided striking a pedestrian at a crossing. The chase finally concluded in Croydon, where Walker stopped the vehicle and was arrested by Kent Police officers after a brief standoff.

Upon his arrest, Walker tested positive for cannabis at the scene and subsequently failed a Preliminary Impairment Test in custody. Appearing at Sevenoaks Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, the Dover resident pleaded guilty to charges of dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, and driving while unfit through drugs.

A judge sentenced Walker to one year in prison and issued a driving disqualification lasting more than four years. To regain his licence in the future, Walker will be required to pass a mandatory extended driving test.

Investigating officer, PC Lewis McGarrigle, said:

‘Instead of just pulling over, Walker tried to escape with no regard for the safety of other road users and his dangerous driving could have caused serious injury.

‘Yet officers were determined to stop him. They patiently, and professionally, pursued him until it was safe to arrest him.

‘Walker tried to excuse his behaviour by saying he was scared but it was clear from his drug use and driving that he knew he was breaking the law and was trying to evade justice.’
