Folkestone & Hythe District Council is turning up the heat on its green goals by launching a major new initiative to bring solar power directly to its residents.
In a move that promises both a cleaner planet and lower utility bills, the council has officially kicked off its first-ever dedicated solar installation programme. This two-year project is set to transform the rooftops of 250 council-owned properties, marking a significant milestone in the district’s journey toward a carbon-neutral future.
The program is designed to put money back into tenants’ pockets, with homes hand-picked based on their potential for energy savings to ensure those who stand to benefit most from reduced bills are first in line. The process is remarkably efficient, as most installations are completed in less than a day. To ensure peace of mind for residents, every single installation is inspected and signed off by expert council surveyors. Property services firm Ian Williams has already reached out to the first 100 households to begin surveys and move the project forward.
This solar surge builds on the massive success of the council’s recent Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund (SHDF) project. That multi-million-pound investment has already upgraded 463 homes, significantly boosting their comfort and efficiency.
The results of these continued efforts are impressive, as 80% of the council’s entire housing stock is now rated EPC C or higher. Furthermore, every single home included in the SHDF program reached that vital “Gold Standard” rating or better. By blending cutting-edge solar technology with proven energy-saving upgrades, Folkestone & Hythe District Council is ensuring that local housing is a sustainable investment in the community’s future.
Cllr Rebecca Shoob, Cabinet Member for Housing and Homelessness, said:
“It is fantastic to see the positive impact the energy efficiency measures have already made to tenants’ lives.
“The wellbeing and comfort of our tenants is our priority, and we will continue to invest in improvements that help reduce energy use and costs in their homes.”
