Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) is urging residents in Kent and Medway to enjoy the summer season responsibly and to minimise the risk of emergencies.
Station Manager and Wildfire Lead Officer Gary Miller highlighted that warm weather can cause grass to dry out quickly, allowing fires to spread rapidly. He advised the public to never leave barbecues, bonfires, or fire pits unattended, and to ensure they are positioned far away from trees, fences, and dry grass.
Additionally he warned that disposable barbecues should only be used in designated areas and must be thoroughly doused with water before disposal, while cooled ashes should be emptied onto garden soil rather than directly into bins.
The emergency service also raised awareness about water safety, warning that open water can hide strong currents and deep hazards, while remaining much colder than expected.
KFRS advised people to swim only in designated areas with lifeguards, to avoid walking near water after consuming alcohol, and to use the “float to live” technique if they get into difficulty.
Members of the public were reminded to take their litter home, avoid throwing cigarettes on the ground, check in on vulnerable neighbours during hot spells, and call 999 immediately if they see anyone struggling in the water.
