The celebrated British artist David Hockney has died at the age of 88, passing away peacefully at home on June 11, just a month shy of his 89th birthday.
Renowned for his vivid, joyful depictions of California swimming pools and his pioneering embrace of digital technology, Hockney’s career spanned more than seven decades, leaving an indelible mark on 20th and 21st-century contemporary art.

On display until November 1, Hockney’s Sunley Window 2026 installation at the Turner Contemporary features a massive, adaptation of an iPad painting depicting a vibrant sunrise in Normandy which floods the gallery with light and serves as a striking final testament to his lifelong fascination with the changing seasons, technology, and the coastal atmosphere that first inspired J.M.W. Turner.
