Two fire engines were called to a flat in Pine Tree Avenue, Canterbury, yesterday evening after a lit candle on a windowsill is believed to have started a fire.
The incident, which occurred between 20:07 and 20:47 on Thursday 11 June 2026, saw emergency crews wearing breathing apparatus extinguish the flames. Firefighters also deployed a high-pressure fan to clear the smoke-logged property.
Investigation into the cause suggests that a burning candle caught a nearby window blind alight. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Following the incident, fire crews are reminding the public of the importance of candle safety. Residents are urged to always blow candles out before leaving a room or going to sleep. Additionally, candles should always be placed on a flat, sturdy, non-flammable surface, well away from materials that could easily catch fire, such as curtains, cushions and clothing.
