The historic Maison Dieu in Dover is set to become the focal point for maritime history enthusiasts this summer as it hosts a major academic conference exploring the rich heritage of the Cinque Ports and coastal Kent.
Scheduled for Friday 26 and Saturday 27 June 2026, the two-day event promises a captivating blend of illustrated talks, guided tours, and ceremonial pageantry designed to appeal to seasoned academics, archaeologists, and armchair historians alike.
This collaborative event is jointly organised by the Kent Archaeological Society Maritime Kent Group, the Confederation of Cinque Ports, the Maison Dieu, Dover District Council, Dover Town Council, and Dover Museum. By uniting leading specialists, the conference aims to unveil fresh research and insights into a uniquely vital chapter of England’s coastal past.
Attendees can look forward to an extensive programme of short, accessible presentations tackling diverse topics that range from medieval governance and ancient record-keeping to the evolution of Dover Harbour and the stories behind Victorian shipwrecks. The distinguished line-up of speakers features experts from prestigious institutions, including the University of Kent, Canterbury Christ Church University, University College London, and the University of Southampton. Beyond the lecture hall, delegates can explore the Maison Dieu and surrounding historic landmarks through guided tours, whilst viewing a curated display of rare Cinque Ports memorabilia from the Dover Museum collection.
A central highlight of the weekend will be the Friday evening Conference Reception, which promises a grand ceremonial gathering of the Mayors of the Cinque Ports, ‘Ancient Towns’, and Limbs. This traditional procession will be officially welcomed by the Mayor of Dover, Councillor Bekah Dawes, alongside David Page, the Speaker of the Cinque Ports and Mayor of Winchelsea, who will be accompanied by the Admiralty Sergeant bearing the historic Cinque Ports silver oar. Further official prestige will be added on the Saturday, when the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, Sir George Zambellas, attends to formally close the proceedings.
