Canterbury City Council said it has been absolutely blown away by the overwhelming response to the City Wall wildflower planting this spring. Hardly a day went by without another stunning photo popping up online!
There was a heartfelt thank you to everyone who took a moment to snap a picture, drop a message, or send in a kind word. Every single compliment was appreciated by the whole team.
Why the Chop?
With the prolonged heatwave and Mother Nature holding back on the rain, the council said it was always looking inevitable that the meadow would eventually start looking a bit tired and sadly it has reached that point.
After carefully reviewing the options to ensure the council can give residents and visitors alike a spectacular display next spring and summer, it has been decided it’s time to cut the meadow back and scheduling is currently underway.
The council says the decision comes down to striking the right balance. They need to nurture the ecosystem to prepare the soil and plants for next season, while keeping this prominent spot looking presentable. Crucially, cutting it back now also eliminates the serious fire risk caused by these unusually parched conditions.
The absolute last thing anyone wants is a stray cigarette end thrown from a car window sparking a severe fire and undoing all the hard work that went into this project.
