A drug dealer from Marden who tried to discard his supply of cocaine moments before being detained by police has been jailed for three years.
Kent Police launched an investigation into Dean Smith following reports of suspicious activity at an address in the town. Residents had raised concerns after observing multiple individuals entering a communal garden and leaving with small packages. Officers carried out initial enquiries and identified 51-year-old Smith as the resident, putting the property under surveillance.
On 1 May 2026, officers moved in to execute a search warrant at the premises. As patrols arrived at the scene, a Police Community Support Officer spotted Smith stepping out of a vehicle and covertly tossing a package underneath a parked car. Officers quickly recovered the discarded parcel, which was confirmed to contain cocaine, and placed Smith under arrest.
Smith was subsequently charged with possession with intent to supply Class A drugs. He admitted the charge in court and was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment at Maidstone Crown Court on Tuesday 4 August.

PC John Cockrill, the investigating officer, said:
‘This was a dedicated investigation which allowed officers to secure enough evidence to ensure Smith had no choice but to plead guilty to the offence. Even as officers went to arrest Smith, he was caught red-handed trying to discard his drugs further strengthening the case we had against him.
