A massive emergency response was launched in Dover on Tuesday evening,18 August, as a fierce blaze engulfed a huge quantity of haybales in St Margaret’s-at-Cliffe.
Eight fire engines and specialist support vehicles, rushed to the scene in Station Road after Kent Fire and Rescue Service control operators received reports of the escalating incident shortly after seven o’clock.
At the peak of the emergency, firefighters battled the flames using an array of heavy equipment, including two all-terrain vehicles, a bulk water carrier, and a specialized fire fogging unit to manage the intense heat and suppress the spreading fire. The service’s technical rescue unit was also deployed to the site, while dedicated volunteers from the response team provided vital welfare support to the crews working on the front line.
By Wednesday morning, the massive operational response had been scaled back, though two fire engines remain on scene to monitor the area. Firefighters are currently carrying out a controlled burn of the remaining materials. This as a standard and effective firefighting tactic used to safely eliminate lingering fuel hazards. Officials have confirmed that no injuries were sustained during the incident, and an investigation into the cause of the blaze is ongoing.
