Dozens of Folkestone residents forced from their homes following a major blaze at the iconic Grand Burstin Hotel have finally been allowed to return.
Families living in 90 flats at neighbouring Pavilion Court were hastily evacuated after the dramatic fire on 19 September 2026 sparked fears that the hotel structure could collapse. Following thorough investigations by structural experts, the exclusion zone around the seafront landmark has now been reduced, paving the way for residents to go home. Power has been fully restored and final fire safety checks completed on the morning of Thursday, 1 October.
Folkestone & Hythe District Council, which housed displaced locals in temporary accommodation alongside support from voluntary groups, praised residents for their patience during days of upheaval. Dedicated council teams are now arranging extra waste collections to help returning households clear spoilt food from fridge-freezers left unpowered during the evacuation.
While residents are back in their properties, nearby Harbour Approach Road and sections of Marine Parade remain closed as highway teams work to restore full access for local businesses.
Residents returning to Pavilion Court in need of help and support can visit the council website for advice or call 01303 853000 between 10am and 4pm on weekdays.
Extra waste collections are being organised as residents will need to clear fridges that were turned off whilst the building was empty.
