Dreamland Margate, home to the UK’s oldest wooden roller coaster, is getting set to celebrate National Roller Coaster Day on Tuesday 16th August 2022, shining a spotlight on the park’s crowning glory, The Scenic Railway.
Free ride for first 102 guests
First opened in 1920, it turns 102 years old this year and to honour this milestone, Dreamland will offer free rides on the Grade II* listed wooden wonder to the first 102 guests through the (aptly named) Scenic Gate on Tuesday morning!
Shane Guy, Head of Operations at Dreamland said: ‘We’re so happy to be able to operate The Scenic Railway again after two years of being out of service. To see and hear our guests whizzing around enjoying our iconic coaster is a real thrill!’
In continuation of the celebrations and to commemorate this historic ride, Dreamland has also launched a competition to name the two Scenic trains, which since Dreamland re opened in 2017 have carried more than 400K thrill seekers.
Shane explains: ‘The Scenic has been our crowning glory since the 1920s and just like Dreamland itself, she’s had a rich and vivid history with more twists and turns than – well, a roller coaster! In honour of her turning 102 this year we’re offering fans the opportunity to name her trains. The two lucky winners will not only see their names on the trains, but they’ll also receive a commemorative piece of the Scenic Railway to keep forever.’
To enter name suggestions, just head to Dreamland’s website and fill out the online form. https://www.dreamland.co.uk/national-roller-coaster-day-2022/ There’s no limit to entry suggestions. The competition will close on Tuesday 30th August and winners will be chosen by an authorised Dreamland representative. Winners will be announced on Thursday 1st September 2022.
A highlight in coaster aficionados’ calendars, National Roller Coaster Day honours all the fun bringing, scream inducing, gum flashing rides that amusement and theme park fans have loved since the 1800s, when the first vertical loop roller coaster was patented in the US.
