A man suspected of robbing an elderly woman was arrested within minutes of the incident being reported.
Kent Police was called at 7.39am on Tuesday 23 May 2023 after a man was seen to assault a woman in her 70s in Gillingham High Street before he fled with her handbag.
Officers from Medway’s Community Policing Team promptly arrived in the area and a man who matched the description of the suspect was arrested in Skinner Street at 7.50am. The victim’s handbag was also recovered.
Officers would like to thank members of the public who came to the victim’s aid during the incident.
The suspect, a 25-year-old man from Gillingham, was arrested on suspicion of robbery and he remains in custody while enquiries continue.
