A stunning new underwater sculpture, Alluvia, by Jason deCaires Taylor has been unveiled in the River Stour and will be formally gifted to the city. Located opposite the Guildhall near the Westgate Towers, Alluvia replaces the original 2008 installation, which deteriorated over time.
The new sculpture, inspired by Shakespeare’s Ophelia, is made from recycled glass, LEDs, and marine stainless steel, and includes environmental sensors. It is illuminated at night, making it visible throughout the day and night.
Jason describes Alluvia as reflecting the river’s flow and the invisible barrier of water. The sculpture transforms with the seasons and light, gradually becoming covered with reeds and algae.

The formal gifting event will take place on Sunday (22 September) with city council and Canterbury Commemoration Society representatives in attendance. Cllr Charlotte Cornell expressed gratitude for Jason’s generous contribution, highlighting the city’s commitment to combining contemporary art with heritage and promoting equal representation of women in public art.
