A violent thief has been sentenced to prison after assaulting a man at a Maidstone bus stop and stealing his phone.

Damien McCann attacked his victim from behind on the evening of January 5, 2020, near Pad’s Hill. The unprovoked assault left the victim with several injuries, including a fractured tooth. McCann repeatedly punched and kicked the victim before stealing his phone and fleeing the scene.

McCann, 28, from Strood, was arrested weeks later and charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and robbery. Despite pleading not guilty, he was convicted following a trial at Maidstone Crown Court. On September 9, 2024, he was sentenced to two years and nine months in prison.

Detective Constable Mark Giles commented on the case, describing McCann’s actions as a “truly cowardly assault” and expressing hope that the sentence brings some comfort to the victim and his family.
