A prolific burglar who targeted properties across north Kent has been sentenced to prison after leaving behind forensic evidence at the scene of his crimes.

Lorenc Stefanaj, 31, from Luton, Bedfordshire, was handed a one-year and six-month jail term at Maidstone Crown Court on Wednesday, October 16.

Stefanaj’s crime spree began on December 29, 2023, when he broke into a property in Wrotham Road, Meopham. After smashing a window, he stole jewellery of significant sentimental value to the homeowner. Police were alerted and later recovered Stefanaj’s DNA from a piece of broken glass at the scene.

The burglar struck again in January 2024, targeting a property in Larks Field, Longfield. He forced his way into the premises through a window but left empty-handed. Forensic analysis revealed blood at the point of entry that matched Stefanaj’s DNA.

In February, Stefanaj turned his attention to a house in Banstead, Surrey. He gained entry through a window and conducted an untidy search of the property before stealing jewellery. Once again, DNA evidence linked him to the crime.

Investigators obtained CCTV footage from one of the crime scenes and shared the information with other police forces. Stefanaj was eventually arrested in London on April 22 after discarding a rucksack containing two screwdrivers while attempting to evade police.

Stefanaj pleaded guilty to three counts of burglary at Maidstone Crown Court and was sentenced to prison. His conviction highlights the importance of forensic evidence in solving burglaries and bringing offenders to justice.

Investigating officer, Detective Constable Dan Bister, said:

‘Stefanaj burgled properties where the residents were absent and ruthlessly targeted jewellery. The loss of these sentimental items to the victims had a significant impact on them and he should be thoroughly ashamed of his actions.

‘He thought only of making a quick profit while selling people’s irreplaceable items. This man is a callous criminal and fully deserves his time in prison.’
