Weather Forecasters at the Met Office are warning people in Kent to prepare for significant disruption across the region this Thursday due to developing thunderstorms and heavy showers. Torrential downpours are expected, with some areas seeing up to 35mm of rain in an hour, and potentially 60mm in two hours. This intense rainfall, combined with frequent lightning and hail, poses several risks:

  • Hazardous Driving: Expect difficult driving conditions with spray and sudden flooding, potentially leading to road closures.
  • Travel Delays: Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there’s a chance of delays and cancellations for both train and bus services.
  • Power Outages: There’s a slight chance of power cuts, which could affect homes and businesses.
  • Property Damage: A small chance exists for quick flooding of homes and businesses, with potential damage from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail, or strong winds.

The storms will likely develop Thursday morning and continue through the afternoon, becoming more confined to the south and east of the warning area later in the day before subsiding in the evening.

What to do:

Your safety and preparation are key. Here are essential steps to take:

  • Assess Flood Risk: If your property is prone to flash flooding, consider preparing a flood plan and an emergency flood kit now.
  • Secure Property: Before strong winds arrive, secure any loose outdoor items like bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, gazebos, sheds, and fences to prevent damage.
  • Check Travel: If you plan to drive, check road conditions before you leave. For public transport users, review bus and train timetables and adjust your travel plans if needed to avoid delays.
  • Prepare for Power Cuts: Be ready for potential power outages. Gather torches, fresh batteries, and a charged mobile phone power pack, along with any other essential items.
  • Seek Safe Shelter: If you’re caught outside and hear thunder, immediately find safe, enclosed shelter, such as a car. Do NOT shelter under trees or structures that could be struck by lightning. If you are on high ground, move to lower ground.
  • Stay Informed: Weather warnings can change rapidly. Stay updated with the latest weather forecasts for your area from reliable sources like the Met Office.
