Police in Sheerness have seized an axe, cash, and illicit drugs following two separate incidents of crime and disorder on Saturday afternoon. Two men were charged in connection with the events.

In the first incident, police responded to a report of a disturbance on Rose Street where vehicles were being damaged. Officers arrived and arrested a man, also seizing an axe. A 42-year-old man was later charged with criminal damage, possession of an offensive weapon, possession of a bladed weapon, and affray. He appeared in court on Monday and is scheduled for a hearing at Maidstone Crown Court on September 2. Later the same day, officers detained two men after a reported assault on Winstanley Road. During the arrests, police seized a quantity of suspected Class A drugs, cannabis, and cash. A 19-year-old man was charged with assault, being concerned in the supply of Class A drugs, possessing criminal property, and possession of cannabis. He appeared in court on Tuesday and was released on bail. His next hearing is scheduled for September 2 at Maidstone Crown Court. A second man, 25, was released on bail pending further investigation.

Inspector Julia Bassindale said:

‘We are determined to patrol in our town centres to offer a visible deterrent and a prompt response to any incidents that take place. In these two recent arrests, our officers were in the area and were able to respond swiftly while securing vital evidence. We will continue this enforcement throughout the summer in support of our law abiding residents and business owners.’
