Alluvia’ Photo: SCOPIX
The underwater sculpture near Canterbury’s Westgate Towers has been nominated for a major art award, and it’s up to you to help it win!
The spectacular Alluvia, a stunning underwater sculpture by renowned artist Jason deCaires Taylor, has been shortlisted for the Public Statues and Sculpture Association’s (PSSA) annual awards. The sculpture, which was installed in the River Stour last September, is a finalist in the prestigious Excellence in Public Sculpture category.
But here’s the most exciting part: the winner is decided entirely by public vote! This is your chance to champion this incredible work of art.
Alluvia is a true marvel of modern art and environmental engineering. Made from recycled glass, marine-grade stainless steel, and LEDs, it’s lit from within, making it a beautiful sight day or night. It even has sensors that monitor the environment it lives in. This innovative sculpture replaced a previous one that couldn’t withstand the fast-flowing river, a testament to its thoughtful design. The Canterbury Commemoration Society commissioned and gifted the sculpture to the city. While it’s a permanent fixture that changes with the river’s ebb and flow, its beauty remains constant. Don’t miss this opportunity to show your support! You can vote for Alluvia on the PSSA website until Sunday, October 5th. Let’s help bring this award home!
The council’s Cabinet member for culture, Cllr Charlotte Cornell, said:
“Alluvia changes with the waters. She is beautiful and she is tragic. You can read sadness into her if you like, or you can read a reflection on nature and human damage to our waterways, or perhaps she is Ophelia and a representation of the great contribution this city has made to literature. The reason she is great art, is that she is 100 different things to 100 different people. She is well deserving of a vote to win this important award.”
