The highly anticipated refurbishment of the Lower Leas Coastal Park’s fun zone is officially underway, with the removal of some existing play equipment beginning today, Monday, December 8.

This is a critical step to pave the way for a major £750,000 upgrade slated for completion by the 2026 summer season. The primary reason for the immediate removal of the tower structure and zipline is to allow preparations for essential cliff stabilisation work. This complex remediation strategy is necessary to secure the area following a landslide last year.

These measures are designed to prevent future landslips and ensure public safety. Once this work is completed in the new year, attention will turn to delivering the new, first-class play area. Despite the partial removal, families planning a festive visit still have options. Popular equipment, including the spider web, pirate ship, and sand diggers, will remain in place over the Christmas break and beyond.

The tender process for the new play area design is currently well underway, and the chosen scheme is expected to be shared with residents in the new year.
